Graphic novelist Danica Novgorodoff chooses little known explorer and scientist Alexander von Humbolt as the subject of this picture book biography。 Often called the father of ecology, von Humbolt is again one of thise people others should know more about。 Novegorodoff effectively captures von Humbolt's spirt of inquiry and adventure。 She sprinkles his questions throughout the narrative。 She celebrates his ability to see how things in the world are connected。 We see how contemporary ways of thin Graphic novelist Danica Novgorodoff chooses little known explorer and scientist Alexander von Humbolt as the subject of this picture book biography。 Often called the father of ecology, von Humbolt is again one of thise people others should know more about。 Novegorodoff effectively captures von Humbolt's spirt of inquiry and adventure。 She sprinkles his questions throughout the narrative。 She celebrates his ability to see how things in the world are connected。 We see how contemporary ways of thinking were probably influenced by his work。 End notes reveal even more about this subject and the author's interest in him。 A great book to add to other science titles that focus on ecology and inquiry。 。。。more

Alexander Von Humboldt was a fascinating character, and Novgorodoff brings him to vivid life in this book, which feels both timeless and up to the minute。 I also love the playful yet detailed style of the illustrations。

Beautiful and thoughtful - this book makes a great gift for friends of any age - appropriate for reading to a toddler or as a graduation gift。 Every time I read it with my 4 year old we discover more hidden beauty in the drawings。 Highly recommend!

What a lovely book! I keep giving our copy away and having to order a replacement。 The illustrations and text are incredibly engaging。 The science and natural history become accessible to children through a memorable, relatable character; and adults will find much to love (and learn) as well。

Frans de Waal, when interviewed for the NYTimes Book review this week, acknowledged that we have von Humboldt to thank for the recognition that the earth is one big ecosystem and that we are all interconnected。 Now, thanks to Danica Novgorodoff's beautifully illustrated and written book, this fact is being shared - with children as the target audience。 And, the pictures, maps and text engages children on many levels。 All three of my grandsons (ages 3, 7 and 11) absorbed the artwork, maps and the Frans de Waal, when interviewed for the NYTimes Book review this week, acknowledged that we have von Humboldt to thank for the recognition that the earth is one big ecosystem and that we are all interconnected。 Now, thanks to Danica Novgorodoff's beautifully illustrated and written book, this fact is being shared - with children as the target audience。 And, the pictures, maps and text engages children on many levels。 All three of my grandsons (ages 3, 7 and 11) absorbed the artwork, maps and the text with great curiosity and enthusiasm。 What an important and timely message that "we are all in it together" and must remain united to save our earth - both the ecology and humanity。I look forward to Danica Novgorodoff's future endeavors as illustrator and author。 Her artistic talents appeal to most ages and are combined with important lessons for children and adults alike。 。。。more

This is a timely and inspiring children's book for kids and parents who are concerned about climate change。 I had never heard of Alexander Von Humboldt before, and now that I've read this book, I certainly do know about this naturalist-explorer-volcanologist's groundbreaking work。 He sounds like he was a scientist ahead of his time, and Danica Novgorodoff tells a modern story of him, painting him in a sympathetic light in terms of his awareness about race and colonialism。 While I'm not an expert This is a timely and inspiring children's book for kids and parents who are concerned about climate change。 I had never heard of Alexander Von Humboldt before, and now that I've read this book, I certainly do know about this naturalist-explorer-volcanologist's groundbreaking work。 He sounds like he was a scientist ahead of his time, and Danica Novgorodoff tells a modern story of him, painting him in a sympathetic light in terms of his awareness about race and colonialism。 While I'm not an expert on children's literature, I was curious to see that the author's notes at the back of the book seem to be written for parents and teachers, as a teaching tool。 But the story itself is told beautifully, charmingly illustrated and full of action and adventure。 A really nice touch was the way the text included quotes from Alexander's own writings。 This is a well-researched book! 。。。more

A well written, beautifully-illustrated story of probably the most influential botanist in history。 I highly recommend for students of all ages!

Kids love this book! My 5 year old asks for it often and we have gifted it to friends (boys and girls of ages 5-9) who all find something to draw them in。 The illustrations are beautiful (and somehow have a special place in my brain next to The Little Prince) and relate Humbolt’s path and mark on history in a way that’s accessible to us all。Highly recommend this lovely book to grown ups and kids alike。

This book is GORGEOUS -- the illustrations really feel like whole worlds, and the refrain that "everything is connected" becomes even more meaningful as the story goes on。 A detailed author's note in the back adds more context for those who are curious。 A perfect read for science- and nature-loving kids (and adults)! I love this book! I love how the author has made this important historical figure accessible to children。 And I love the book’s celebration of curiosity, exploration and science and the way it teaches this to children。 The primary theme of “Alexander” – the interconnectedness of all things – is so vital to our world, especially now with climate change, and it’s presented in such a fun and understandable way。 Equally important, I love the superb illustrations。 I’ve read this book to my grandkids, I love this book! This gorgeously illustrated picture book depicts the life of naturalist Alexander von Humboldt。 I didn't know anything about him before reading this book and I was captivated by all the traveling he did and all the scientific discoveries he made in his lifetime。 I especially loved the way this book traced his evolution from a shy and lonely boy to someone who ended up teaching about the interconnectedness of the world。 The illustrations are beautiful (great images of all the animals he encounter This gorgeously illustrated picture book depicts the life of naturalist Alexander von Humboldt。 I didn't know anything about him before reading this book and I was captivated by all the traveling he did and all the scientific discoveries he made in his lifetime。 I especially loved the way this book traced his evolution from a shy and lonely boy to someone who ended up teaching about the interconnectedness of the world。 The illustrations are beautiful (great images of all the animals he encountered plus lots of mountains and volcanoes) and there's a lot of fascinating information in the back of the book for further reading。 This book would be great for a science-loving kid and would also make an excellent addition to an elementary or middle school science classroom library。 。。。more

I adore this book! With his ongoing refrain of how things are "all connected," this story of an intrepid young explorer carries the important message that what any of us do on this earth is both connected to the planet and to each other, so we must be careful and thoughtful stewards。 Novgorodoff's illustrations are whimsical and funny while being cleverly informative about plants, nature and most especially, volcanoes。 Great for kids 3/4 and up to follow and upwards to read themselves。 I adore this book! This is one of the greatest books for kids (and adults!)。 I met Danica in Ecuador 20 years ago and am fortunate to still be in touch and to appreciate her amazing work。 Not only are Danica's watercolor paintings in Alexander von Humboldt beautiful and amazing, the way she weaves the story of Alexander's explorations into the nature of the Earth (and more specifically the origin of South American volcanoes) and his discoveries about how everything is connected is awesome。 This is honestly one of This is one of the greatest books for kids (and adults!)。 I met Danica in Ecuador 20 years ago and am fortunate to still be in touch and to appreciate her amazing work。 Not only are Danica's watercolor paintings in Alexander von Humboldt beautiful and amazing, the way she weaves the story of Alexander's explorations into the nature of the Earth (and more specifically the origin of South American volcanoes) and his discoveries about how everything is connected is awesome。 This is honestly one of the best books for teaching kids and all readers that one basic truth about our planet and about one of the earliest and most thoughtful explorers in history。 And it even has a bibliography and was based on many of von Humboldt's writings! Beautiful illustrations and a good message: Everything is connected。 Now, I want to read even more about (and by) Humboldt。 This was a great primer and launching pad for learning about the 18th-century pioneering naturalist。

This picture book is a 3。5 for me。 I'm sure that I'm not the only person who finds that the more I read, the more I realize I don't know。 This picture book biography is an example of that。 Although I have been interested in ecology and the environment most of my life, I had never heard of Alexander von Humboldt, its subject and the man considered to be the Father of Ecology。 For those who love maps--yes! I do!--the front endpaper consists of a map of his travels from Europe to South America, Central America, and North America from 1799 to 1804。 Sweeping, soft pencil and watercolor illustrations of various sizes follow young Alexander as he makes the connection between and among living creatures and their habitats to his struggles in school due to his dreaminess and then as a young man when he crosses the Atlantic to explore what was known as the New World。 While the lands, their people, and the creatures that live there are quite different from those with which he is familiar, Alexander also recognizes how they are connected。 The repetitive lines about connection and the landscape-filled images give readers the same sense of awe and discovery that Alexander must have experienced as he moved through unfamiliar terrain, eventually climbing an enormous volcano。 The back matter includes a timeline of his life, a bibliography, and a list of sources for the quotations used in the text。 An interesting Author's Note provides additional information about von Humboldt, including his further explorations and the fact that he, unlike most other scientists of the time, did not acknowledge race as a biological category。 Clearly, Alexander viewed the world through a Eurocentric perspective, usual for those times, but he remained fascinated by the cultural aspects of the individuals living in the areas he explored。 Nascent ecologists and anthropologists will be intrigued by every page of this book, especially the back matter and Alexander's insatiable curiosity about the natural world。 。。。more

Another wonderful picture book biography for budding naturalists, and one that highlights our connections as much as our differences。 I especially like that it is written and illustrated by someone who lived in Ecuador for a time, a place where Humboldt did much of his research。
